2.1 From Start to Scale: The Evolution of Family Philanthropy

As a family’s philanthropy grows, there are critical strategic and operational choices to be made that can present both challenges and opportunities on its path to driving impact at scale. Join Missy Narula, CEO of Crankstart Foundation, and Terri Ludwig, CEO of the Ballmer Group, as they share valuable insights about launching, establishing, and scaling a family’s philanthropy. In conversation with Kim Meredith, CEO of the San Francisco General Hospital Foundation, this session will explore the different philanthropic structures that are available—including DAFs, 501c(3) foundations, and LLCs—and how they can be used independently and concurrently to achieve a family’s philanthropic goals. Panelists will offer practical insights on navigating operational efficiencies, and strategies for building and maintaining trusted teams to scale impact.
