Jean Yen-chun Lin
Jean Lin is an Assistant Professor at Cal State East Bay. She completed her postdoctoral fellowship at the Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society at Stanford University, and received her PhD in Sociology from the University of Chicago. Her research and teaching center around social movements, community organizations, and civic participation.
She is currently working on her book manuscript titled “A Spark in the Smokestacks: Environmental Organizing in Beijing Middle-class Communities”, which looks at how Chinese homeownership among the rising middle-class cultivated new urban spaces for community participation and collective action organizing against environmental threats in Beijing. The book depicts the rise of community-based associational life in an authoritarian regime since the early 2000s. She has also published on topics related to environmental protests, Taiwanese labor movements and leadership, and international non-governmental organizations. She hails from Taipei and did her undergraduate studies at National Taiwan University.
