Meet the Coalition for Independent Tech Research
March 1st, 2023 - 1:30 pm to 4:00 pm
Room 320D, Crown Quad
Every aspect of modern life is influenced by digital data and technology. Understanding these influences requires access to the data that is generated by these systems; the vast majority of which is held as proprietary information by commercial enterprises that are under no obligation to share it. This stymies public and independent efforts at understanding, oversight, accountability, and advocacy. Recent legislative proposals such as the Platform Transparency and Accountability Act offer one approach. The Coalition for Independent Technology Research (CITR) is another. We invite you to join us to learn more about the Coalition and its potential for your work.
We invite you to join representatives of the Coalition on Wednesday, March 1, 2023 from 1:30 – 4:00 p.m. at the Stanford University Law School (Room 320D, Crown Quad*), hosted by the Stanford Digital Civil Society Lab. We will feature Dr. J. Nathan Matias, Founder of the Citizens and Technology Lab, Assistant Professor at Cornell University, and a member of the Coalition’s Executive Board, in conversation with representatives from civil society and academia. This event is open to government officials, academics, independent scholars, funders, and civil society organizations. By bringing together people from a broad set of professional settings, each with different needs for data access, we intend to consider collective responses to their shared reliance on commercially produced data.
In order to attend, we ask that you please RSVP to Lucy Bernholz at Bernholz@stanford.edu by February 24, 2023.
