Stanford PACS Intro to Effective Philanthropy for Advisors: Introducing the Philanthropy Toolkit
Our team at Stanford is here to help you help your clients become more effective philanthropists. We’ve spoken with hundreds of advisors and their clients, identifying challenges, expectations, and opportunities for better philanthropic engagement. In this session you will:
- Learn about effective philanthropy and do an interactive exercise you can use immediately with clients
- Get a taste of the longer Stanford + AiP effective philanthropy training workshops (launched in 2020, offered 4x/year)
- Review Stanford’s resources and practical planning frameworks designed specifically for advisors, donors and their families who want to move beyond haphazard giving to inspired, strategic philanthropy
- Receive a 50% discount on the Stanford Effective Philanthropy Toolkit!
This session will be useful for advisors who are interested in:
- An organized framework for having strategic client conversations about philanthropy as a key component of wealth management
- Connecting more deeply with clients and NextGen family members by helping them find joy and meaning from their wealth
- Improving services for clients who have experienced a life event making philanthropy a higher priority—such as new empty nesters, recent retirees, or people managing greater wealth as the result of an IPO, selling their business, or receiving an inheritance.
- Getting a quick sense of the longer, more comprehensive advisor trainings Stanford and AiP offer
In addition, there will be opportunities for you to share what kind of future collaborative programming and trainings from Stanford and AiP would be most valuable for you.
The world needs wise advisors and effective philanthropy now more than ever. We hope you will join us.
Speakers:
- Erinn Andrews Director of Philanthropy Research and Education, Stanford PACS EPLI

Understanding Participatory Philanthropy and Impact Investing
Over the last few decades, philanthropists have indicated an increasing interest in practices that show respect for the autonomy and needs of their grantees and beneficiaries. Participatory philanthropy and participatory impact investing—practices that invite beneficiaries, grantees, community members, or other stakeholders to weigh in on philanthropic funding decisions—reflect two such movements that prioritize these goals.
Join us for a discussion between Stanford Professor Paul Brest, faculty director of the Effective Philanthropy Learning Initiative at Stanford’s Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society and former President of the Hewlett Foundation; and the authors of a recently-published book on participatory funding, Ben Wrobel and Meg Massey.
What are the characteristics of these practices? What are the benefits of this approach? What are the challenges and limitations? And how can donors whose goals align with the goals of these practices become more involved?
Speakers:
- Paul Brest Faculty Director, Stanford PACS EPLI, Former Dean and Professor Emeritus (active), Stanford Law School
- Ben Wrobel Director of Communications, Village Capital, co-author “Letting Go”
- Meg Massey Journalist, co-author “Letting Go”
