Priya Fielding-Singh

Priya Fielding-Singh is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Sociology Department at Stanford University studying social inequality. Her research investigates on the one hand, the roots of inequality, and on the other, the means to remedy it.

Her first area of research examines the social determinants of health. In her dissertation, The Inheritance of Health, she combines interview, ethnographic, and experimental data to unpack the complex relationship between socioeconomic status and diet.

Her second area of research examines the circumstances under which individuals are motivated to challenge inequality. She is currently collaborating with Professor Doug McAdam and Ph.D. candidate Jennifer Hill on a longitudinal study of contemporary activism on a college campus. In their forthcoming book (with Cambridge University Press), they investigate the means through which some – but not all – students become engaged in various political, civic, and activist commitments during their college years.

Priya is currently a Research Assistant for the Center for Poverty and Inequality. During her doctoral studies, she has been a Graduate Fellow at the Clayman Institute for Gender Research, the Center for Ethics in Society, and the Haas Center for Public Service. She has conducted research with the Clayman Institute for Gender Research, the Center for Science in the Public Interest, and Humanity in Action. Priya holds a B.S. in Education and Social Policy from Northwestern University and a M.A. in Cultural Studies from the University of Bremen, Germany.
